The display may construct a display map by selectively driving the display and sensing the optical image created. The system reports on its status, and is able to predict when the system will no longer meet a quality target. The system and method may optimize a display system and keep it optimized over time. Operators of the display who require a minimum level of quality for the display system can be ensured that the display meets those requirements. And, they can be warned in advance as to when system maintenance can be necessary, when quality falls below targeted goals system and method provides for sending out methods of the quality of the system.

A method for displaying images comprising: a. selectively displaying pixels on a display that includes optical mechanical, thermal and electronic (OMTE) display parameters, at least one of the OMTE display parameters being variable; b. sensing at least one of displayed pixels and absence of displayed pixels; c. deriving, either explicitly or implicitly, a mapping between either the sensed pixels and the display or the sensed pixels and the sensor; d. deriving a pixel correction function based on the mapping; e. deriving a display quality correction function based upon the sensed pixels; f. applying the display quality correction function by setting at least one of the OMTE display parameters; g. applying the pixel correction function by modifying input image pixel data to produce corrected pixel data; and h. driving the display with the corrected pixel data.
