PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods of producing more than about 400 nmol/g/hr of isoprene.SOLUTION: The present invention provides: cells comprising a heterologous nucleic acid encoding an isoprene synthase polypeptide; compositions containing the cells; and methods of producing more than about 400 nmol/g/hr of isoprene from the cells. With the methods, isoprene is produced at lower costs and at yields, titers and purity that are sufficient to meet demands of a commercial process, from inexpensive starting materials.
