Disclosed are a substrate for gas diffusion exhibiting a porosity gradient in a thickness direction; a gas diffusion layer using the same; an electrode for a fuel cell comprising the gas diffusion layer; a membrane electrode assembly; and a fuel cell. The gas diffusion layer has the excellent performance of discharging water and excellent transverse strength in both a machine direction and a cross machine direction.
