PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower the error rate of a reproducing signal, in a magneto- resistance effect type head, by reducing the hysteresis of a transfer curve in the magneto-resistance effect. SOLUTION: The magneto-resistance effect(MR) type head is provided with an MR element, in which an MR film is laminated through a nonmagnetic spacer film on a SAL (soft magnetic) film consisting of a soft magnetic material for applying a horizontal bias to the MR film, and with an electrode for flowing a sense current for signal detection to the MR element. In this case, the MR element is constituted of a reproducing track width part for reproducing a magnetic signal and a part superposed on the electrode; the length of the entire element with these parts combined is 5μm or less; and the ratio of the element width to the element length (aspect ratio) is not more than 0.3.
