Cosmetic composition

A self-heating cosmetic composition comprises an oxidant and a reducing agent maintained separately from one another, the usual ingredients of a cosmetic composition being associated with either or both parts of the composition, at least one part of which is aqueous, the oxidant being hydrogen peroxide or urea hydrogen peroxide and the reducing agent being thiourea or a compound of the general formula wherein R1 and R2 may each be an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxy or alkanoyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms and additionally R1 may be hydrogen and R2 may be phenyl (e.g. 1-phenyl-5-ethyl 2-thiobarbituric acid or 1-methyl-2-thiobarbituric acid or 1-phenyl-2-thiobarbituric acid), the concentrations of the oxidant and reducing agent in their respective parts of the composition being such that, when the parts are mixed together, there is a sensible temperature rise (i.e. at least 25 DEG F. from room temperature within one minute) in the composition. A catalyst (e.g. an alkali metal or ammonium tungstate or molybdate) for the reaction may be included in the part containing the reducing agent. The composition may also contain a buffer ingredient (e.g. a polyalkanolamine having up to 9 carbon atoms) in an amount such that the mixed composition has a pH from 5 to 10. Conventional stabilizers (e.g. phenacetin, stannates and acid phosphates) may be present in the part of the composition containing the peroxides. A self-foaming composition may be obtained when carbonate or bicarbonate is present and an acid by-product is produced during the exothermic reaction. The composition may be in a package having two compartments for separate storage of the ingredients and from which they are adapted to be dispensed simultaneously for reaction, one compartment containing the oxidant and the other containing the reducing agent. The composition preferably includes a liquefied gas propellant under pressure for expelling the ingredients from the compartments. The composition is preferably a shaving preparation, but may also take the form of a shampoo, hair conditioning rinse, hair bleach, hair dye, hair dye remover or a composition to be applied to the skin.
