The device has distance sensor modules (6) arranged in a spindle nose for forming termination of spindle heads (4A, 4B) in a processing chamber (1). The modules are aligned in a direction of the chamber and connected to a common signal processing unit. The processing unit generates a warning signal based on measuring signals delivered by the individual modules when an obstacle is present in a predetermined area of the chamber. The warning signal is outputted at an output of the processing unit, where the output is connected to a machine control of a processing machine. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a protection device.
