<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply detect an ejection failure of ink liquid droplets. <P>SOLUTION: A light beam is irradiated in the vicinity of a position on a flight route of ink droplets where a plurality of ink droplets are united each other to form one main droplet, in a direction orthogonal to the flight route. An output received by a light receiving element of a scattering light generated when the light beam intersects the ink droplet is subjected to high-pass filter processing and amplification processing, whereby a peak is extracted. In this case, the peak from a predetermined time during a time from immediately after the plurality of liquid droplets are ejected from nozzles to immediately before a timing when the plurality of liquid droplets are united each other to form one main droplet is extracted.
