A method of making a flexible sheet material comprises preparing a layer of non-woven fibrous material, superimposing on said layer a layer of a flexible material to form a composite layer, applying to the composite layer a liquid comprising a binder and a vaporizable vehicle and securing differential distribution of the binder by applying heat to one surface of the composite layer differentially with respect to the other surface, removal of the vehicle by vaporization and (if appropriate) heat-curing of the binder also being effected by the application of heat. In embodiments of the invention; the composite layer is subjected to substantially uniform heating after differential distribution of the binder has been secured; the composite layer is confined between metal plates or belts during the differential heating, one of the plates or belts optionally being cooled. The non- woven-fibrous material may be a fell or fleece e.g. a needle-punched layer of crimped interpenetrated nylon filaments overlaid with and needle-punched to a needle-punched polypropylene fleece. Specified flexible materials, which may be permeable or impermeable, are woven textile fabrics, paper, plastic net fabric and polymer sheets e.g. cotton cambric, tissue paper or polyurethane film. Specified liquids are solutions of polyurethane rubbers or precursors thereof, rubber latex or an aqueous emulsion of a solution of an elastomer. |
