<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst capable of obtaining a high mercury-oxidation ratio while keeping an SO<SB>2</SB>oxidation ratio low by using a manganese component as an active component for oxidizing the metal mercury instead of vanadium, which causes the increase of the SO<SB>2</SB>oxidation ratio. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method for oxidizing the metal mercury in exhaust gas comprises a step of reacting the metal mercury incorporated in exhaust gas with oxygen or a halogen compound by using the catalyst.
