PURPOSE:To improve cracking activity and gasoline selectivity, by uniformly dispersing a phosphorus-containing alumina/particle with a particle size of 2-60mum and crystalline aluminosilicate throughout a porous inorg. oxide matrix. CONSTITUTION:Preliminarily prepared alumina or alumina hydrate with a particle size of 2-60mum is contacted with a phosphate ion (PO<3->4) containing aqueous solution and the impregnated one is dried and baked to obtain a catalyst composition for the catalytic cracking of hydrocarbon uniformly dispersed throughout a porous inorg. oxide matrix. The catalyst composition is also obtained by a method wherein coarse particulate alumina or alumina hydrate is contacted with a phosphate ion-containing aqueous solution and the impregnated one is dried, baked and ground so as to obtain a particle size of 2-60mum. The amount of phosphorus introduced into the alumina particle by the contact with the phosphate ion-containing aqueous solution is pref. in a range of about 0.01-0.20 on the basis of a P/Al atomic ratio.
