PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost absolute linear encoder easy to downsize and an actuator using the same. SOLUTION: The encoder includes one banded linear scale, and two detectors disposed opposite to the linear scale and disposed substantially at a 90-degree phase difference interval. The linear encoder includes a detection head relatively movable in regard to the linear scale, a counter for counting the number of bands cut across based on signals from the two detectors, and a control means for calculating the position of the detection head with respect to the linear scale based on the signals from the counter.
