A defect detecting apparatus for a flat panel display is provided to improve defect detecting efficiency for a large base material by using laser sheet light with less energy consumption and superior straightness. A defect detecting apparatus for a flat panel display comprises a stage(10), a light unit(20) and a photographing unit(30). The stage is loaded with a base material(12) as a detection object on the upper surface. The light unit is progressed in parallel to the upper surface of the base material, and radiates laser sheet light having a predetermined expansion angle. The photographing unit is installed on the upper portion of the base material, and obtains picture information of the base material.
