The unit (10) has two independent sensor components (12, 14), which detect a physical parameter in opposite directions along an axis and output signals with different signs based on the detected physical parameter. The signals are separated from each other, the signals of the component (12) are evaluated for impact recognition and the signals of the component (14) are evaluated for verification. The parameters of the components are implemented in a switchable and/or configurable manner and cover a range of values and/or a resolution. An independent claim is also included for a protective system for a vehicle with a controller.
