A novel dye which has high conversion efficiency, excellent weatherability and heat resistance when it is used in a dye-sensitized solar cell and a dye-sensitized solar cell comprising this dye. This dye is represented by the following formula (1): <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?>ML<SUP>1</SUP>L<SUP>2</SUP>X<SUP>1</SUP>X<SUP>2</SUP> (1) <?in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?> wherein M is an element of any one of the groups 8 to 10 of the long form of the periodic table, L<SUP>1 </SUP>and L<SUP>2 </SUP>are each independently a bidentate ligand composed of a specific bipyridine, and X<SUP>1 </SUP>and X<SUP>2 </SUP>are each independently a monovalent atomic group or unidentate ligand.
