PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder capable of effectively preventing any double feed of sheets even when the sheets are picked up while adhesion between the sheets is not released. SOLUTION: The sheet feeder comprises a sheet storage tray 17 for storing sheets 20 in a stacked state, a pickup roll 21 for picking up the sheet from the sheet storage tray 17, an air blowing unit 24 for blowing air to a front end of the sheets stored in the sheet storage tray 17, a feed roll 22 and a retard roll 23 for feeding the sheet picked up by the pickup roll 21 while being nipped, and a sheet returning mechanism 28 which is driven to return the sheet in the direction opposite to the sheet pickup direction between the sheet stacking position P1 and the nip position P2 of the sheet storage tray 17.
