PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting device cutting out a designated cutting area 174 from a medium 170. SOLUTION: The cutting device is equipped with: a conveying part 144 conveying a medium 170 in the conveying direction; a cutting carriage 130 reciprocatingly moving in the crossing direction to the conveying direction at the position opposed to the medium 170; a cutter 250 held on the cutting carriage 130 so as to advance to and retreat from the medium 170; a control part 100 cutting the medium 170 by operating the conveying part 144 and the cutting carriage 130; and direction sensors 190, 192 which read medium direction display figures 176, 178 displaying the medium direction information indicating the direction of the medium 170 by being recorded on the surface of the medium 170. The control part 100 detects the direction of the medium 170 charged, based on the medium direction information obtained from the direction sensors 190, 192, and generates the cutting line information relative to the medium 170 based on the image information given from the external part.
