PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of optimizing piston stroke characteristic. SOLUTION: The piston stroke characteristic in a suction stroke of the internal combustion engine is variably controlled to optimize the piston stroke characteristic. More concretely, when engine load is low, exhaust top dead center of a piston 1 is set to a lower position and combustion chamber volume at the exhaust top dead center is relatively increased compared with them at the time when engine load is high, and piston stroke amount of the piston 1 in the suction stroke is reduced compared with that at the time when engine load is high to improve fuel economy and output greatly.
