<p>The clutch may be a friction clutch or a magnetic clutch. It is engaged at a low crankshaft speed e.g. 1500 to 1700 rpm to increase the turbocharger speed and is disengaged at high crankshaft speed, above 2000 rpm to avoid overspeeding the turbocharger. An alternative system uses a CVT (Continuously-Variable Transmission) to allow the turbocharger to run up to its maximum speed - approximately 18000 rpm. As the crankshaft speed rises above 2000 rpm, the effective gear ratio may be reduced from 1:7 to 1:2 before disengaging the turbocharger shaft from the crankshaft.</p> |
