PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a voltage regulator capable of setting a maximum output current at a constant value regardless of a difference between input and output voltages, thus reducing a short-circuit current regardless of the maximum output current. SOLUTION: The voltage regulator comprises a first overcurrent protection circuit whose maximum output current does not depend on the difference between the input and output voltages, and a second overcurrent protection circuit that keeps the short-circuit current at or below the maximum output current. When the output voltage is high in the presence of overcurrent, the first overcurrent protection circuit operates. With a drop in the output voltage, the second overcurrent protection circuit operates. With a further drop in the output voltage, the overcurrent detection resistance of the second overcurrent protection circuit is increased to limit the output current. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
