PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal hydride complex which is useful as a catalyst for hydrogenating a carbon-carbon unsaturated bond or the like and has high solubility in a hydrocarbon solvent such as toluene. SOLUTION: The metal hydride complex having a carboxylic acid residue is represented by formula (1): MH<SB>k</SB>Q<SB>n</SB>T<SB>p</SB>Z<SB>q</SB>[wherein M is a metal selected from Ru, Rh, Os, and Ir; Q is a carboxylic acid residue represented by the formula: -O-CO-R<SP>1</SP>(wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a substituent selected from a 2-18C alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, and an aryl group); T is at least one atomic group selected from CO and NO; Z is PR<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>(wherein R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, and R<SP>4</SP>are the same or different and each an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group or an aryl group); k is 1 or 2; n is 1 or 2; p is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4; q is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4; and the sum of k, n, p, and q is 5 or 6].
