PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify a commutating pattern generating means without the need of many voltage detectors for generating the commutating pattern and to realize turning off of all AC switches in a simple sequence when a failure occurs. SOLUTION: This AC-AC direct conversion power converter, such as a matrix converter, comprises a power source mode deciding means 2 for deciding the power source mode from magnitude relation of a power source side multi-phase AC voltage; a gate pulse rearrangement means 1 for rearranging the gate pulse to a AC switch group, according to the power source mode; a commutation pattern generating means 4 for preventing short circuiting of the power source or the opening of a load end from the gate pulse of the rearranged AC switch group and for outputting a switch pattern of a unidirectional switch; and a pulse-distributing means 6 for distributing a drive pulse to each unidirectional switch which constitute each AC switch, according to the magnitude relation of the power source side polyphase AC voltage, based on the switching pattern.
