PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate an internal combustion engine so as to correspond to required conditions accurately by supplying desired reformed gas into a combustion chamber from a reforming device. SOLUTION: In this internal combustion engine 1, CO and H2are burned in the combustion chamber 3 to generate power. This internal combustion engine 1 is provided with the reforming device 20 for generating reformed gas containing CO and H2by reforming air-fuel mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and air and an ECU 50 for setting air-fuel ratio of the air-fuel mixture in the reforming device 20 to maintain reforming efficiency of the reforming device 20 within a predetermined scope and setting amount of the air-fuel mixture supplied into the reforming device 20 so that actual output torque in the internal combustion engine 1 agrees with target torque.
