PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of a device for reading and writing data from and into a host via an interface wherein if the capacity of a buffer in the device is smaller than a data size requested by the host, the adoption of a method of returning an unprocessed data size to the host to expect command resending or of repeating processing in units of the capacity of the buffer results in a reduced data transfer rate. SOLUTION: If a data size requested by a host computer 101 is larger than the capacity of an internal data transfer buffer memory 105, a general-purpose work memory 106 of larger capacity is used in data transfer instead of the buffer memory 105. A processible data volume per command can be increased to realize high speed data transfer irrespective of the capacity of the buffer memory 105. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
