PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a specific gravity determining device for highly accurately determining whether the specific gravity of an electrolytic solution in a storage battery is adequate or not, even when affected by vibration. SOLUTION: End voltage V1(tn) of a resistance connected in series to a specific gravity sensor is input at n-th time tn in each of 100μs sampling cycles, an average value Vm(tn) for the voltage V1(tn) input for past 50 seconds up to the time tn is computed, and a rateθis computed by dividing it by the end voltage of the resistance with the specific gravity sensor being on (S106-110). A rateθp located 20% from the top of the rateθcalculated for past 100 seconds up to the time tn and lined in an increasing order is computed and an electrolytic solution gravity d is computed by substituting the rateθp into a corresponding expression between the preset rateθp and the electrolytic solution gravity (S112, 114). Whether the electrolytic solution gravity d is less than a reference specific gravity 1.17, where an engine can be started, or not is determined (S118). COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
