PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting element without leakage of light, with high light take-out efficiency. SOLUTION: The display device comprises a layer with high refractive index formed on a translucent base plate, and at least an organic electroluminescent element composed of single or multi-layered organic thin film layers formed on a layer with high refractive index interposed between transparent first and second electrodes. The layer with high refractive index, having refractive index higher than that of the light emitting layer, is made of a material having a refractive index of 1.65 or higher, and the central line of the interface between the layer with high refractive index and the translucent base plate is roughened so as to have an average roughness of larger than 0.01μm and smaller than 0.6μm.
