The drive train has a single frictional coupling (14) that can be actuated by a first actuator (60) and is connected on the input side to a vehicle engine(12), a discrete gearbox (16) connected to the coupling's output side, a first group of wheel sets (30-40) for selecting and deselecting corresp. forward gears and a corresp. number of shape-locking controlled couplings (44-54) with associated synchronising devices and actuators (62,64,66) for selecting and deselecting gears. A controller (70) drives the actuators in a co-ordinated manner. The synchronising devices are suitable for a synchronising process under partial load and the controller drives the actuators so that at least one type of gear change is performed without fully disengaging the frictional coupling. An Independent claim is also included for a method of controlling a drive train.
