摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical system which has high light use efficiency and small illuminance unevenness and color unevenness by increasing the efficiency of superposition coupling of two pieces of projection luminous flux after polarization conversion in an illumination optical system including a polarized light converting element and to provide a projection type display device which uses the illumination optical system and has superior display image quality. SOLUTION: After random polarized light is converted into specific polarized light, the luminous flux is subdivided and respective pieces of the luminous flux are superposed and coupled, and guided to an illumination area, so the illumination optical system for light polarization can be realized, which has little divergence loss of light and also has small illuminance unevenness and color unevenness. The light projection type display device using the illumination optical system can be realized.
