PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive stepping motor by simplifying its mechanism. SOLUTION: On the periphery of a gear-shaped moving element (1) of about 3 mm thickness, a plurality of small teeth (1a) of the moving element and a plurality of grooves which are half the small teeth (1a) in thickness, are formed. Also electromagnets (3-1), (3-2) and (3-3) which have yokes the same as the small teeth (1a) in width, are arranged so that magnetic poles are at intervals twice the width of the small teeth (1a). In addition, the electromagnets are fixed so that the magnetic poles interpose the tips of the small teeth (1a) between slightly. Concerning driving, the moving element (1) rotates counterclockwise by a step half the width of the small teeth (1a), if the electromagnets are energized in the order of (3-2), (3-3) and (3-1). If the order of energization is reversed, the direction of rotation is also reversed. The torque of the motor can be increased twice or threefold by doubling or tripling the number of the electromagnets. The torque can be also increased by making the diameter of the moving element (1) larger. In this case, the step angle becomes smaller since the number of the small teeth (1a) increases also. By the above means, the cost of the stepping motor can be reduced.
