PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic encoder which does not have limitations about outside diameter and is applicable even to a motor having a large hollow diameter, without troubles in the magnetic encoder of a reluctance type. SOLUTION: This magnetic encoder is provided with a moving scale, fixed to a rotating or linearly moving mover and having plural slit tracks formed by a slit-like hole in a surface of a thin plate which is a magnetic body, plural magnetic sensors fixed to a stator and disposed opposite to plural slit tracks via a void, and plural bias magnets disposed to plural magnetic sensors. In the magnetic encoder, moving scales 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d are divided into plural parts, a groove-like or step-like knock part is made on a scale base 2 fitted to the mover, and scale joint parts 13a, 13b, 13d of the moving scales 1a, 1b, 1c, 1d stuck to the knock parts to be joined by the slit-like holes.
