PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a short arc mercury discharge lamp that enables maintaining stable discharge by shifting rapidly from glow discharge to arc discharge at the starting of the lamp and by moving rapidly the arc discharging position from the coil to the top end of the electrode. SOLUTION: In the short arc mercury discharge lamp which arranges a coil 5 at the side of one of the electrode 4 and in which mercury of 0.15 mg/mm3 or more is filled in the discharge container, the electrode top end side 51 of the coil 5 is fixed to the side of the electrode 4 and the continuing portion 52 to the electrode top end of the coil 5 is structured to be separated from the side of the electrode.
