A remote meter reading arrangement in which utility consumption data accumulated in a meter which is located within an underground enclosure is transmitted to a data storage means in a mobile receptacle carried by an individual. The data is transmitted by way of an inductive coupling one coil of which is located in the enclosure cover and electrically connected to the data storage means in the meter, the other coil of the inductive coupling being located on the end of an extension rod carried by the individual and electrically connected to the data storage means in the mobile receptacle.
