PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily correspond to high tensile force and high rotation speed of a transmission member by miniaturizing a hydraulic autotensioner, particularly, in the radial direction. SOLUTION: A piston part 18 of a plunger 8 enters a cylinder hole 17a of an inner cylinder 17 fixed on a casing 11 of a hydraulic autotensioner 10 so as to slide vertically. A high pressure oil chamber 23 is formed between the cylinder hole 17a and a lower end face of the piston part 18, and a low pressure oil chamber 24 is formed between the inner cylinder 17 and the casing 11. A gas case 31 is provided in an upper part of the plunger 8, and a high pressure gas chamber 35 in which high pressure gas for return 36 is sealed is formed on an inner side of a cover part 29 and in an upper part of the low pressure oil chamber 24 to energize the plunger 8 in the direction of retraction.
