The cylinder has a cooling water gallery enclosing the gas flow passages and sparking plugs or fuel injectors. It has at least one passage extending longitudinally of the cylinder head to direct gas flow and with connecting ducts extending from it, each opening into the gas exchange passage. The spark plugs or injection nozzles can extend through protective shells (21) positioned in the longitudinal passage. The protective shells can be partially separated from the longitudinal passage.
