A new communication cable (1) has conductors (2) that are individually insulated (4) and grouped. The dielectric constant of the insulation is 3.7 /! 0.3. The conductors are surrounded by a screen (7), which has an earth continuity lead (6). The assembly is surrounded by an insulating, protective sheath (8). The novelty centres on the individual conductor insulation, which comprises a polyolefinic silane composition, with at least one mineral filler. Also claimed is a dual-purpose cable as described, which includes phase conductor(s) (10) and a neutral (9). The filler forms more than 35% or 45% of the total weight of the insulation. The polyolefinic composition is a graft silane, rather than cross-linked. Some or all of the silane arises from organo-silane treatment of the mineral filler. The polyolefinic composition contains polyethylene and/or an ethylene copolymer. The filler is chalk, alumina trihydrate or magnesium hydroxide. The cable also has a filling (11), a peripheral screen (12) and a peripheral protective sheath (13). |
