PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical compensating sheet which hardly undergoes reticulation in storage at high temp. and humidity and is excellent in wet heat resistance by cross-linking a polyvinyl alcohol polymer with a dialdehyde compd. in the presence of an acid and forming an alignment layer made of the cross- linked polyvinyl alcohol polymer and a liq. crystalline compd. layer on a transparent substrate. SOLUTION: The polyvinyl alcohol polymer is represented by the formula (wherein L<11> is an ether, urethane, acetal, or ester bond; R<11> is alkylene; L<12> is a group linking R<11> to L<11> ; Q<11> is vinyl, oxiranyl, or aziridinyl; x1 is 10-99.9mol%; y<1> is 0.01-80mol%; z1 is 0-70mol%; x1 +y1 +z1 =100; and k and h are each 0 or 1). The substrate is pref. one having a light transmission of 80% or higher. The liq. crystaline compd. used is a disklike one. The dialdehyde compd. is, e.g. glyoxal. The acid is, e.g. sulfuric acid. |
