Electromagnetically operated mechanical interlock for motor vehicle gearbox selector lever

The lever (1) is pivot mounted (4) and has an elongated recess on one surface (6) into which is set an armature plate (20). An adjacent fixed housing element has a cylindrical magnetic yoke that has an inset coil. The yoke has a ring shaped projection that aligns with one of two grooves (23) in the armature plate, dependent on the position of the selector lever. The lever is interlocked by excitation of the coil so causing the armature to move and the grooves and projections to engage. The linear movement of the armature plate is ensured by having it located on guide pins.
