Automatic gearbox with hydraulic torque converter

The gearbox has encapsulated gear pairs which are formed by a gear pump and impeller with a pinion. They are so combined as to form a hydraulic circuit, in which the engine torque is converted into hydraulic pressure in the gear pump, with the pressure reconverted in the impeller into torque. Pref. in the torque converter pressure chamber is incorporated a rotary slide valve for engaging the impeller on right- or left-hand side. The impeller house gaps are closed by flap valves, opening and closing with the impeller rotation, thus forming a forwards and rearwards drive.
