At this time since the temperature of the auxiliary catalyst layer 10 is already sufficiently raised by a sheath heater B11, the gases CO, HC in the exhaust gas are purified as they pass through the communicating hole 10a and discharged from an exhaust gas hole 12. And at the auxiliary burner port section 6 flame is burned for a certain time, and when the temperature of the main catalyst layer 8 is raised to sufficiently active temperature (temperature over about 300 deg.C required) the supply of the fuel is once stopped so that the flame goes out and then the supply of the fuel is started again.</p>
