The apparatus for improving the reproduced sound as optimizing the necessary bit number includes a frequency analyser dividing the input digital audio signal into the specific bands and analysing the frequency element of each band, a bit allocator receiving the masking critical value considering the human hearing characteristic and determining the allocated bit number according to the stored data quantity of the buffer in variable, and a quantumiser quantumising the frequency element of each separated band according to the information of the bit allocation to compress the audio signal.
