In appts. for measuring the orientation of boreholes and slits in building ground, the novelty is that (a) a frame (2) is arranged above the borehole or slit to act as a suspension for a measuring probe (3) which detects the inclination w.r.t. the vertical; (b) a carriage (4) can be lowered to a preset depth in the borehole or slit to take up a defined position w.r.t. the borehole or slit wall; and (c) the cardanically suspended probe (3) is connected to the carriage (4) such that its alignment corresponds to the carriage orientation.The frame (2) is in the form of a tripod and may be designed for seating on the upper edge of a borehole casing such that it assumes a definite position w.r.t. the casing edge. The probe (3) is suspended centrally w.r.t. the rim of the borehole or slit and may be swivel mounted for error compensation.
