Electrical connector 1 of the separable type with a basically rectangular oblong housing 5 of electrically insulating material and provided with separable contact elements 3 with a contact end 15 consisting of a finger- like separable contact. The upper surface 6 of the housing 5 has contact openings 12 for making contact with the contact elements 3 in the direction transverse to the upper surface 6. To make the housing as thin as possible, in the housing 5, the finger-like contact ends 15 are arranged transversely with respect to the direction of contact. A plug type connector 2 particularly suited for use in combination with such a separable connector 1 also consists of a basically rectangular oblong housing 20 having plug contact elements 4 with a contact end 24 comprising a rectangular sheet part that is perpendicular to the upper and side surfaces 21; 22; 23 of the housing 20. <IMAGE>
