PURPOSE:To provide a display device in which luminance is made high by using a reflection type spatial optical modulation element. CONSTITUTION:The device for displaying an image on a screen S by using the reflection type spatial optical modulation element SLM is provided with two polarizing beam splitters PBS and PBSi which are arranged so that the arrangement relation of the reflection and transmission film surfaces PBS-1 and PBSi-1 formed on the respective beam splitters may be such relation that incident polarized light is reversed. Even in the case non-parallel rays of light are increased by energizing a light source LS to obtain a bright image, undesired light is prevented from being mixed in readout light and the image having high luminance and high contrast is obtained. |
