The video tape recorder compatible with the existing VTR and outputting high-quality video by compressing the bandwidth of video with half sub-sampling and recording/playing the halved bandwidth signal includes a Y/C separator (30) for separating the video input signal (VS) into luminance signal (SY) and chroma signal (Sc), a sampler (32) for outputting two sampling luminance signals of half sub-nyquist-Y(&phgr;) and Y(-&phgr;) which are phase-shifted by 180 degrees, and a multiplexer for multiplexing the Y(&phgr;) and Y(-&phgr;) and outputting the luminance signal (SY).
