The switch carriage (1) has two pairs of wheels (2,3) positioned one behind the other for movement of the switch carriage (1) outside the switch cell. Rollers (4,5) are provided for movement of the switch carriage when within the switch cell. The rollers (4,5) cooperate with a guide rail (6) which has an inclined lead-in section (6a) for lifting the switch carriage (1) as it is pushed into the switch cell, so that the rollers (4,5) are raised to the level of the rail (6). The two sets of wheels (2,3) are successively contacted during insertion by a stop edge (7) which allows them to be displaced into a rest position under the action of an associated spring (8). When in the rest position, the wheels lie beneath the base of the switch carriage (1).S
