PURPOSE:To obtain phenols in high selectivity by using a copper compound, manganese compound and lanthanum compound as an oxidative decarboxylating reaction catalyst in the liquid phase and bringing benzenemonocarboxylic acids, salt, ester or anhydride thereof into contact with an O2-containing gas. CONSTITUTION:Benzenemonocarhboxylic acid, a salt, ester or anhydride thereof is brought into contact with a molecular oxygen-containing gas (steam is preferably used in combination) in the presence of a copper compound, manganese compound and lanthanum compound to afford phenols. The copper compound (e.g. basic copper carbonate) is used in an amount of preferably 0.1-3wt.% based on copper and the manganese compound (e.g. manganese oxide) is used in an amount of preferably 0.1-5wt.% based on manganese. The lanthanum compound (e.g. lanthanum oxide) is used in an amount of preferably 0.1-5wt.% based on lanthanum. Thereby, the formation of by-products can be suppressed by using the aforementioned catalyst and selectivity of phenol can be remarkably enhanced. |
