The present invention pertains to novel solid solutions involving NiO, V2O3 and TiO2 and the method for their preparation. The compositions involving NiO, V2O3 and TiO2 fall within the shaded area of a polygon in a ternary composition diagram of NiO, V2O3 and TiO2 as shown in the drawing herein e.g., FIG. 1. The composition may be used as an oxidation catalyst or in the manufacture of high temperature refractories.
