The invention relates to a sharpener for a saw 4 in particular in the form of a band, a blade or a disc, and carrying a plurality of teeth 32, 33, each tooth having several parts made from materials of different hardness, the sharpener comprising: a sharpening tool 7; means 2, 5, 6, 11, 17 for holding the saw facing the tool; and displacement means 12, 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 28 arranged to provide a relative displacement between the sharpening tool 7 and the saw 4 at a speed which is predetermined as a function of a predetermined tooth shape to be obtained. According to the invention, the sharpener includes means for varying the speed, which are arranged so as to cause the said speed to vary during a sharpening cycle for each tooth, so that in each tooth part sharpening takes place at a speed which is correspondingly lower, the greater the hardness of the material constituting this part. Application to the sharpening of saws carrying a hard alloy coating. <IMAGE>
