PURPOSE:To satisfy both aspects of fuel economy and power performance sufficiently, by controlling a direct couple clutch having slip characteristic such that the torque converter will operate with the speed ratio lower than the coupling point in accordance to the output torque of an engine. CONSTITUTION:The torque transmission capacity of a direct couple clutch Cl having slip characteristic is controlled such that the torque converter T will operate with the speed ratio lower than the coupling point in accordance to the output torque of an engine E. Consequently when cruising, the entire output torque from the engine E can be transmitted through a direct couple clutch Cl having high transmission efficiency to drive wheels W, W'. While when accelerating or climbing, the slippage is produced in said clutch Cl in accordance to the increase of the output torque to increase the ratio of torque passing through the fluid transmission system of the torque converter thus to recover the torque amplifying function inherent to the torque converter and to recover the power performance. |
