On each side of the aperture closed off by the sliding panel 2 are arranged floor elements 6 bearing on the end of a balance beam 8 which, at rest, is at some distance above the ground. The balance beam 8 is connected by means of a tie rod 10 to a pivoting stirrup 12, itself connected by means of a link 16 to two parallel oscillating connecting rods 18 carrying a grooved pulley 22 at their free end. The pulley 22 cooperates with the inner face of an arm 23 which is articulated at its lower end and the upper end of which cooperates with a roller 27 carried by the upper part of the panel 2. The user's weight on the floor element 6 causes a pull on the stirrup 12 which brings about a push on the pulley 22 on the arm 23 which rises, thereby causing the panel 2 to slide into its opening position. The invention is used for all sliding doors, especially those located at places of work or in places frequented by the handicapped. <IMAGE>
