In a process for preparing a solution of chemicals by dissolving a solid or liquid ionogenic initial concentrate in water as a solvent and for metering the solution (20) of chemicals prepared in this manner into a water (58) to be treated, during the dissolution operation, the concentration of at least one dissolving ion of the initial concentrate (12) is measured continuously or at intervals with the aid of an ion-selective sensor (30). The addition of the initial concentrate (12) to the solvent is controlled according to the deviation of the measured ion concentration from a predetermined preset value of concentration. Additionally thereto, during the metering operation, the concentration of at least one of the ions of the initial concentrate, dissolved in the water (58) to be treated, can be measured continuously or at intervals with the aid of a further ion-selective sensor, so that the metering of the solution of chemicals into the water (58) to be treated can be controlled according to the deviation of the measured ion concentration from a predetermined preset value of concentration. <IMAGE>
